Because Life is Too Short for Dinner and a Movie
An active dating life can be one of life’s greatest joys, but not when you’ve fallen into a rut. It’s time to think outside the popcorn box and get a bit funky. Making time for dates in this day and age is often a feat in and of itself but motivation can be found when you spice things up a bit. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite unconventional date ideas for those who are ready for a bit of an energy infusion.
Visit an Animal Shelter
If you have a pulse, you’ve likely fallen down the proverbial rabbit hole of cute animal videos for many minutes (possibly hours) in a day. Animals are ridonkulous, and a seemingly universal source of joy. Why not tap into this on your next date? Even if you’re not looking for a pet at the moment, visiting an animal shelter can be a super cute bonding experience. And you will often get to take the dogs for a walk which makes them happy, so it’s a win/win.
Put the Notion of Time on its Ear
If you’re constantly doing dates at night, try a daytime matinee or a trip to the zoo. If you’ve found yourself already doing daytime dates, try something different like a picnic under the stars. Sometimes switching things up from what’s become the norm is just what the love doctor ordered.
Consult a Psychic
Even those who are skeptical will find this one fun. Whether you go to someone who reads tarot cards or you channel a family member who has passed, this is one date you will never forget. If you both enjoy it, you can even make this an annual tradition.
Get the Competitive Juices Flowing
You might not think that a tennis match is sexy, but have you ever tried it? Adrenaline and lovemaking go hand in hand, so get sweaty together. From triathlons and mud runs to hitting up a rock-climbing gym and ziplining, the possibilities for active date ideas are seemingly endless.
Get Your Holiday On
If your date lands anywhere near a holiday, take advantage. Going to a haunted house together for Halloween is much more romantic than it sounds. And of course, Christmastime opportunities abound. Whether you go window shopping in Manhattan, take a sleigh ride in the snow or say that age is just a number and sit on Santa’s lap, holidays can bring a couple together.
Try a Shopping Challenge
Whether it’s a grocery store or a clothing store, this can be fun. Give each other ten minutes in any store to find something for the other person, then meet back and discover what you’ve each gotten each other. Make it even more challenging and budget-friendly by putting a dollar limit on it. You’ll surely enjoy some laughs seeing what the other person thought you’d like. This isn’t a great first-date idea since you won’t know each other, but try it on the third or fourth date for some unconventional fun.
Immerse Yourself in Culture
You don’t have to be ultra-fancy to enjoy a trip to the art or history museum, a play or a night at the opera. The latter date ideas offer options for dressing up and, chances are, you don’t do that all that often. Throw yourselves a culture curveball and see what’s playing near you.
Bring Sexy Back
If you’ve gotten into the “old slipper” mode of dating – which is basically getting your sweats on, ordering takeout, and meeting up on the couch for a Netflix binge – it’s time to go on a Dr. Ruth-approved date. Go to a burlesque show. Get a room…yes, even if it’s only a block over. Trade in your night of Netflix for something racier, and make sure you take into account both of your preferences for a night everyone enjoys. If you’re really feeling adventurous, find a sex party in your area. Sex with other couples is totally optional, but even if that’s not your jam, just being there can take your own sex to the next level.
Get Outside Your Comfort Zone
Sometimes getting the jitters can be a good thing, particularly if you’ve been in a relationship for a long time. If you’ve always wanted to try our your jokes at an open mic night, give improv a shot. Why not try seeing if your pipes are worthy of the mic at karaoke? If it doesn’t go your way, you can laugh it off and move on.
Planned dates can be wonderful but sometimes spontaneity is the order of the day. Try hopping on a train and choosing your destination as you go, reservations be damned. Hopefully you’ll find a town near you that you’ve never visited and this will become a regular “thing” in your dating rotation.
There’s no denying that altruism feels good. Some might say that makes it selfish but we say, instead, that it’s a win/win. Grab your partner and let those good vibes take hold by volunteering at the local homeless center, handing out water at a race for a good cause, or by reading to people in a nursing home. If you’ve decided this is something you both really enjoy, there are plenty of opportunities for volunteering abroad that can bring you even closer.
We’re certainly not advocating you get in any trouble with Johnny Law but that pool down the street that your neighbors never use is begging for a 1am swim. Just saying.
