Video Interview with Dr. Carolina on Social Media Censorship
Dr Carolina is an online moderation researcher, writer, blogger, certified pole + twerk instructor, award-winning activist, and visiting lecturer currently based at City, University of London. She has been observing online subcultures since 2016, first during her MA in Criminology and then through her PhD, which focused on online abuse and conspiracy theories in discussions surrounding a high-profile criminal case. She now researches the moderation of online hate, and on algorithm bias against nudity, sexualities and bodies.
Before retraining as an academic, Dr Carolina was a PR account director and social media strategist with six years of experience in both London and Sydney.
Posting Into the Void & Shadowbanning
You’ve Been Shadowbanned!
In this Pleazeme Face to Face (F2F) Interview Heather Montgomery and Dr. Carolina chat about the nature of social media, sex and censorship, criminology, journalism, censorship in social media, American Psycho (the movie), trolling, pole dancing, censored #hashtags on Instagram, shadow banning, women’s bodies being censored, building awareness, gaslighting, sexual wellness, (in)visibility, sex worker activism, posting into the void, and more!
Back in July 2021, Dr. Carolina’s Instagram account was deleted “nine whole years of content creation, network and following building”, despite her being “an online moderation researcher, activist, blogger, writer, survivor and pole dance instructor researching on and campaigning online censorship.”
“I logged in around 6:50 PM UK time to an odd screen, with a a “challenge request” that required me to put in my details. I did it, only to receive the notification that my account had been disabled, without having ever received any deletion warnings, ‘strikes’ for misbehaving or explanation as to why. I panicked, as any creator who uses Instagram as a main source of income, networking and, in my case, research and activism would.”-https://bloggeronpole.com/2021/07/i-was-deleted-by-instagram/
While Dr. Carolina did eventually get her Instagram account back, she notes that many sex workers and content creators don’t, and that shadow banning of women’s bodies in par for the course.
