Do you sometimes look on social media for inspiration but wind up with mixed feelings about online influencers and Photoshopped images? There’s a better source of inspiration out there, more true and achievable: the Divine Feminine and the Awakened Masculine. These spiritual energies are the foundation of tantric sexuality and several Western schools of spirituality.
Exploring these, we can learn to love ourselves and others more deeply, finding power, pleasure, and meaning. Intrigued? Learn more about the ideas around the Divine Feminine, then try an exercise to find that energy in yourself.
The Meaning of the Divine Feminine
What is the Divine Feminine? Caroline Muir, author and tantra yoga educator, says, “The essence of the Divine Feminine is the spark of life that everything grows from.” Our human perceptions combine this energy with female archetypes to bring us the Divine Feminine.
The Divine Feminine elevates many qualities associated with femininity: creativity, receptiveness, wisdom, sensuality, endurance. The Divine Feminine is closely linked to the symbolism around darkness, water, and the moon – yin energy. It also values the idea of creating and sustaining life, physically and emotionally, with kindness and nurturing.

Our Genders and the Divine Feminine
You can find your own relationship with the Divine Feminine. Over the years, different genders have approached the Divine Feminine in their own ways.
In history, women often turned to their Divine Feminine in hours of need, within religions or communities, through prayers to saints and goddesses. Today, women may relate to the divine feminine via a role model, as a friend, or as a better version of themselves.
Art and literature show us that men love to idealize the Divine Feminine. This can lead to ample love of real women. But it can be a problem if they fixate on unrealistic standards of femininity as ‘divine’. For men, reconnecting with the Divine Feminine should include listening to real women’s voices, and seeing their own inner feminine, too.
People exploring alternative genders also love the Divine Feminine. Feminine signs, like skirts and lipstick, can be rebellious and reclaiming. Feminine actions, like nurturing and encouraging growth, can be both subversive and a gift to those around us. It takes courage to seek out the feminine in a harsh world that favors the masculine.
Choose the Goddess That Inspires You
Cultures throughout history have given the Divine Feminine a goddess’s face. These personifications offer beauty and strength for every stage of your life. You have many options when it comes to choosing your personification of the Divine Feminine, and you can focus on different ones for different purposes!
You might immediately think of the goddesses of Greek and Roman mythology. Or of Inanna in Sumerian mythology, Tara in tantric tradition, or saints and mothers in Christianity. These are just a few of the thousand names and faces of the Divine Feminine. There’s many more out there that you may not expect.
The Divine Feminine is fierce, too! The spark of life can be fiery, as with the goddess Shakti. Other archetypes include the wild woman, the sacred prostitute, and goddesses of ferocity and death. Whether you are passionate, angry, or ready to channel change, there is a goddess for you.
Any woman acting with power and creativity shows the Divine Feminine’s energy. An inspirational character, a musician or author, or a gifted politician may speak to the Divine Feminine. When you appreciate them, you draw strength from that shared energy.
The divine feminine may be right beside us. Author David Deida, in his book Finding God Through Sex, recommends worshipping the divine through the form of your partner. Key to this is loving focus on the real person you’re with. Describing one such moment with a lover, Deida wrote, “Her vagina seems to become the universe, and she receives me without limit. She has become a divine form, a goddess, the eternal beloved.”
Bring the Divine Feminine into you: a five-minute meditation
This short meditation can help you see the Divine Feminine in yourself. Try this during the yin time of the day, when it’s dark out.
You will need:
- A private space with a mirror, like a bedroom or bathroom
- Two candles, either white or red
- Oil for your skin – massage oil is excellent
- A favorite lip balm or lipstick
- Five to ten minutes of quiet time, with devices set to silent.
Divine Feminine meditation
Tidy the area in front of your mirror. Then light your candles, placing them near the mirror, and turn out overhead lights.
Stand before the mirror. Inhale. Smell the warmth of the candle wax. Feel your breath moving through you. When you are relaxed and present, breathe deeply three times to ground yourself.
Anoint your hands or body with some oil. Feel your skin; be vulnerable to your own touch. Sense how your skin loves to be nourished.
Anoint your lips with balm or lipstick. Let yourself feel proud, feminine, vulnerable – whatever emotions this brings up for you.
Gaze into the mirror. Look into your own eyes. Visualize them in the face of your most divinely feminine self.
Smile and say a positive phrase, such as: “I love you.“ “I appreciate you.” “I want you to be free.”
Close your eyes and, in your mind, hear your Divine Feminine repeating that phrase. Picture your vision reaching out to you in support, entering with your breath, wrapping around your heart.
Open your eyes again. Look at your own face and know that your eyes and the eyes of the Divine Feminine are the same.
When you are ready to end this moment, breathe deeply three times.
After Your Ritual
What next? It’s a good time to do something sensuous and pleasant. Enjoy a warm bath, a delicious snack, or some time outside. Nap and see what you dream about. Make love, with a partner or alone. You might want to try this Solo Spiritual Sex exercise.

Choosing a goddess that inspires is analogous to choosing a role model in psychology. So yes, I agree that the choice of muses for inspiration is indeed a useful point in achieving femininity.
